Faakir-1 Well Yields Promising Output
KARACHI – In a significant step forward for Pakistan’s energy sector, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) in collaboration with Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) has announced the discovery of natural gas and condensate from its Faakir-1 exploratory well located in Khairpur, Sindh.
The announcement of the discovery was made on Thursday in a notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). OGDCL stated that the Faakir-1 exploratory well is licensed under the Bitrisim Exploration License. OGDCL has a 95% working interest in the well while GHPL holds the remaining 5%.
Depth and Technical Progress
Drilling operations on the Faakir-1 well commenced on December 31, 2024. It equaled an impressive depth of 4185 meters into the Sembar Formation. OGDCL executed the drilling from its own resources and was supported by GHPL as a partner throughout.
Testing Reveals High-Yield Production
Based on wireline log analyses, the exploration team performed two Drill Stem Tests (DSTs) in the Lower Goru Formation targeting the massive and basal sand intervals of the Lower Goru Formation. This well produced 6.4 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) and 55 bbl/day of condensate through a 32/64” choke.
Impact on National Energy Security
It is evident that the gas find in Sindh enhances the commercial viability of the Bitrisim block, but even more importantly, it adds to Pakistan’s local energy reserves. In a statement, OGDCL provided noting that its endeavor directly contributes to reducing the energy demand-supply gap. The company added that its work with indigenous resources provides Pakistan an added step toward energy independence.
Reinforcing Regional Potential
It is also important to note that this is not the first discovery to happen in Khairpur. Last year, OGDCL also discovered gas at the Shahu-1 well in the same district. So, these further discoveries substantiate the region’s geological potential.
Encouraging Investment in Exploration
Industry experts consider this development a positive sign for the future of exploration in Pakistan. As the country faces growing energy challenges, such discoveries can attract more investment and unlock further domestic potential.
With successful wells like Faakir-1, Pakistan continues its journey toward long-term energy sustainability.
