ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s first-ever hand-drawn animated film, The Glassworker, is headed to theaters across the United States following its acquisition by Watermelon Pictures, a US-based film production and distribution company.

Originally released in Pakistan in July last year, The Glassworker was storyboarded and directed by young Pakistani animator Usman Riaz. The film features 1,477 cuts and 2,500 hand-drawn frames, narrating a coming-of-age story about Vincent, a young apprentice in his father’s glass workshop, and Alliz, a gifted violinist and daughter of a military colonel.

Set against the backdrop of an impending war, the film explores strained relationships between children and parents. Over 250 artists and crew members, both local and international, contributed to its creation.

Watermelon Pictures shared the news on Instagram, expressing pride in announcing the US theatrical release of their first animated feature, The Glassworker.

The company noted: “After being chosen as Pakistan’s official submission to the 2025 Academy Awards, The Glassworker made waves in the animation world as the country’s first hand-drawn animated feature. Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s storytelling approach, it is truly a work of art.”

According to DEADLINE, the distribution deal was finalized at Cannes, with Hamza Ali representing Watermelon Pictures and Hélène Espeisse negotiating on behalf of Charades, the firm handling the film at this year’s Marché Du Film.

“This is a visually stunning and emotionally rich film that will leave a lasting impact on viewers of all ages. We’re proud to bring this masterpiece to US theaters,” said Hamza Ali, co-founder of Watermelon Pictures.

Hamza and his brother Badie Ali established Watermelon Pictures in April 2024, with Alana Hadid serving as creative director. The company’s mission is to spotlight underrepresented filmmakers worldwide.

Khizer Riaz, the film’s producer, shared his enthusiasm: “We’re beyond excited that The Glassworker will have a US theatrical release through Watermelon Pictures. Their swift rise and dedication to impactful cinema make them the ideal partner for our film.”
