Defense Officials Meet in Rawalpindi
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Bangladesh have agreed to further expand defense cooperation in all domains. Pakistani state media reported on Saturday, indicating that bilateral relations are on a fairly positive path.
The agreement was made during a meeting in Rawalpindi held between Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Ali, Pakistan’s Defense Secretary, and Lt. Gen. S.M. Kamr-ul-Hassan, Principal Staff Officer of Bangladesh Armed Forces Division.
The two officials expressed their satisfaction with the current military cooperation, and both have agreed to increase and deepen engagement in all defense areas that are mutually beneficial.
Bangladesh Seeks a ‘Vibrant Era’ of Cooperation
Lt. Gen. Hassan expressed a desire for a “vibrant era” of cooperation while speaking to the media, and there was a clear commitment to strengthen military ties further evident in the discussions. This meeting symbolizes the re-engagement of strategic engagement between the two nations.
Historical Background and Political Shift
Bangladesh and Pakistan were part of the same country. The eastern part of Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971 following a brutal civil war. Since then, Bangladesh has had more favourable relations with India and has forged good ties with India, especially under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. But after Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August from the prime minister’s office by a student-led popular uprising, the status of Pakistan-Bangladesh relations witnessed a significant change. This newfound friendship opened the way for newer forms of diplomatic and military cooperation.
Military Commanders Emphasize Strategic Partnership
While in Bangladesh, Lt. Gen. Hassan also met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both sides noted the importance of establishing a long-term defense partnership, with continuous collaboration aimed at being unaffected by external influence.
Economic Collaboration Also Expands
In addition to defense discussions, the two nations also progressed on the economic side. On Tuesday, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) signed a memorandum in Dhaka with Bangladesh’s premier business federation. The agreement created the Pakistan-Bangladesh Business Council. FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh described the mou as a significant achievement. He led a delegation of Pakistani businesspersons who came to Bangladesh to pursue trade and investment opportunities.
Pakistan to Export Rice to Bangladesh
Tacitly, at the time the visit, the Trade Corporation of Pakistan also signed an MoU to export rice to Bangladesh. This is another layer to economic collaboration between the two countries.
Upcoming Visit to Cement Relations
Following these events, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, is to visit Dhaka in early February. The purpose of Mr. Dar’s visit is to further cement relations between the two countries and find other areas of cooperation.
A New Chapter in Regional Relations
The defense and trade agreements mark the start of a new phase and the re-establishment of Pakistan-Bangladesh relations. Both countries are now publicly signalling a commitment to advancing each other through their military and economic relationships.
