The Sindh government has officially declared May 28 a public holiday in connection with Youm-e-Takbeer, the day that commemorates Pakistan’s emergence as a nuclear power in 1998. This decision honors a significant milestone in the country’s history, when Pakistan conducted successful nuclear tests in response to regional security challenges and solidified its status as a strong and credible nuclear state.

A formal notification was issued by the provincial administration confirming that all government offices, private institutions, and educational establishments across Sindh will remain closed on May 28. In addition, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has also announced a full-day closure in observance of the holiday, in line with the government’s directive.

May 28 is recognized as a gazetted holiday at the national level. The day holds great historical and strategic importance, as it marked the moment when Pakistan became the first Muslim-majority country to develop and demonstrate nuclear weapons capability. The nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, at Chagai in Balochistan, were a pivotal response to India’s earlier tests and reflected Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a balance of power in the region.

Govt announces public holiday on may 28 to mark youm-e-rtakbeer - Daily Times

In 2023, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared May 28 an official national holiday to formally recognize Youm-e-Takbeer as a symbol of national pride and sovereignty. The announcement underscored the importance of the day in affirming Pakistan’s deterrence capability and its resolve to safeguard national security under all circumstances.

The celebration of Youm-e-Takbeer continues to serve as a reminder of Pakistan’s scientific and strategic achievements, as well as a tribute to the efforts of the scientists, engineers, and national leadership involved in making the country’s nuclear program a success. It remains a day of reflection, pride, and reaffirmation of national unity.
