The Government bans road travel for Arbaeen pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq for this year’s pilgrimage. The decision was announced by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi following discussions with all major security and foreign affairs officials. He affirmed that Pakistan is under big threats on the roads to Iran via Balochistan.

Security agencies noted an increase in militancy in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. They also threatened to attack pilgrims using the road. Consequently, the government has closed all road access to Iran and Iraq to pilgrims. This covers individual vehicles, buses, vans, and convoyed convoys transiting Taftan border.

After extensive consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Balochistan Government, and security agencies, it has been decided that Zaireen will not be allowed to travel to Iraq and Iran by road for Arbaeen this year. This difficult decision was taken in the interest of…

The authorities have announced that the measure will avert any potential disaster in this delicate religious procession. More than 700,000 Pakistani pilgrims participate in Arbaeen, which is one of the largest gatherings in the world, each year. Most of them tend to use the road because it is cheap and accessible. But this year, the government prioritized the safety of the people over the usual travel preferences.

Air Travel will be maintained through Special Flights

Air travel is the only mode of travel that has been approved by the government to be used by pilgrims to travel to Iran and Iraq. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the authorities to organize special flights to transport Arbaeen pilgrims. He also advised airlines to maintain low fares and provide easy service.

Civil Aviation Authority and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) are collaborating to increase flight operations. This can also be done by additional flights by the private airlines. There will also be officials to help pilgrims with visas, health checks, and boarding at major airports. They will also establish facilitation desks to ensure that passengers do not experience delays or confusion. Special instructions have been given to immigration and airport staff to facilitate this travel plan. Departure points will see clear guidelines, quicker processes, and improved services to pilgrims.

Pilgrims carrying flags walk together during sunset on the Arbaeen pilgrimage, symbolizing devotion, with no vehicles or road visible—reflecting the government's ban on road travel for Arbaeen pilgrims.

Decision Taken to Save Lives

The government indicated that this move is strictly out of safety concern. The authorities are sure that it will save lives and avoid mass threats. They encouraged every citizen to adhere to the new regulations strictly. All activity will be monitored by security agencies to make sure that it is followed.
Individuals should never make an effort to cross the borders using the road. This prohibition can be extended until the situation in the region normalizes. The government will work towards safe religious travel without endangering lives.
