ISLAMABAD: Zardari Resignation Rumors Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi firmly dismissed the circulating rumors about President Asif Ali Zardari being asked to resign. He labeled the narrative a “malicious campaign” designed to damage the credibility of Pakistan’s top leadership and institutions.
In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naqvi emphasized that no conversation had ever occurred regarding Zardari’s resignation. He underlined that such false claims aim to undermine national unity and target key figures, including the Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff.
“We know exactly who is spreading this malicious propaganda against President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the Army Chief,” Naqvi stated.
No Basis for Resignation Talks
The Interior Minister made it clear that no one in the government or military had discussed, considered, or suggested President Zardari’s resignation. He rejected the possibility outright and criticized those behind the disinformation campaign.
“There has been no conversation, no intention, and no interest in forcing the president to resign or in having the army chief step into the presidency,” he clarified.
Naqvi reassured the public that President Zardari maintains a respectful and cooperative relationship with the military leadership, dismissing any suggestion of internal conflict.
President Zardari Denounces Propaganda
President Zardari responded to the rumors by stating he is aware of the source, motive, and beneficiaries behind the disinformation.
“I know who is fabricating these lies, why they are doing it, and who gains from it,” Zardari reportedly said, signaling his intent to expose the truth.
PML-N Backs President Zardari
Senior PML-N senator Irfan Siddiqui also countered the resignation claims during a television appearance on Geo News. He labeled the reports as fictional and sensationalist.
“Claims that Zardari is resigning, Imran’s sons returning, Nawaz going to Adiala – none of it is news. These are just fabricated stories,” Siddiqui said.
He added that Zardari has not caused any issues within the coalition and continues to uphold his constitutional responsibilities.
“There’s no problem working with him. Why would we destabilize our own coalition with PPP?” Siddiqui asked, referring to the alliance between PPP and PML-N.

Online Misinformation Targeting National Institutions
Over the past two years, social media platforms have become fertile ground for anti-government and anti-military propaganda. Officials believe that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to fracture public trust and destabilize governance.
Military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry recently warned that not enough action has been taken under current laws to curb what he called “digital terrorism.” He urged for stronger enforcement to prevent misinformation from threatening national cohesion.
Civil and Military Leaders United
President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir have repeatedly demonstrated unity in matters of national interest. In May 2024, both President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif awarded Munir the rank of Field Marshal, recognizing his effective leadership during recent military operations.
The following month, during a dinner hosted by Munir, he praised the government’s strategic foresight and coordination during the Marka-i-Haq conflict with India, illustrating the strong civil-military alignment.
Hybrid Governance Model Praised
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, a key figure in the ruling PML-N, has openly supported the current hybrid governance model. In a recent interview, he described it as a “practical necessity” that was achieving meaningful results.
His remarks reinforce the idea that collaboration between civilian and military leadership remains intact, leaving no room for narratives that suggest internal instability or presidential overreach by military officials.
Foreign-Linked Agendas Behind Propaganda
Interior Minister Naqvi hinted that foreign actors might be supporting the disinformation campaign, claiming that some individuals are working in coordination with hostile foreign agencies.
“No matter what tactics they use, we will focus on making Pakistan strong again, InshAllah,” Naqvi concluded.

Broader Context and Implications
Experts say the rumors about President Zardari’s resignation are part of a wider campaign. This effort appears aimed at discrediting the government and weakening Pakistan’s political structure. Moreover, the spread of false narratives has become a growing concern for both the civilian and military leadership. Public trust now depends heavily on clarity, transparency, and institutional unity.
In addition, political analysts highlight Zardari’s key role in keeping the coalition stable. Therefore, the idea of his resignation clashes directly with ongoing political goals. Furthermore, both ruling parties PPP and PML-N have repeatedly confirmed their alliance. This unity strongly undermines any speculation about a power struggle within the government.
Final Thoughts
The government and its allies have firmly rejected all claims about President Asif Ali Zardari stepping down. Both Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Senator Irfan Siddiqui stressed that the rumors are baseless and harmful. According to them, these narratives likely stem from sources trying to create unrest in Pakistan.
Given the current need for national unity, civil and military leaders are focusing on stability. They are also working together to expose disinformation and rebuild public trust in democratic institutions.
