Germany lifts missile restrictions for Ukraine, enabling the use of long-range missiles to target Russian military positions. Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed this major policy change during a European forum in Berlin, marking a decisive shift in military support for Kyiv.

“Ukraine now has no range limits on Western-supplied weapons,” Merz stated, emphasizing agreement among Germany, the UK, France, and the US. He added that Ukraine can actively target Russian military sites to defend itself against continued aggression.

Escalating Russian Strikes Drive Policy Change

The decision follows a surge in Russian missile and drone attacks that killed dozens of Ukrainian civilians over the weekend. President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly urged Western allies to allow Ukraine to strike back beyond its borders, emphasizing that pressure is crucial to stop Russia’s brutality.

Chancellor Merz, who recently replaced Olaf Scholz, has taken a stronger stance on supporting Ukraine. While he previously advocated sending Germany’s Taurus long-range missiles, Merz did not confirm whether these weapons would be part of the new policy.

International Reaction and Historical Context

This move builds on the US lifting similar restrictions last November, authorizing Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles against Russia. Moscow reacted with sharp warnings, labeling these decisions dangerous and accusing the West of escalating the conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized Germany’s latest policy, calling it a threat to diplomacy.

Despite Moscow’s objections, Western countries increasingly support arming Ukraine. US Congressman Don Bacon urged allies to provide more weapons, emphasizing, “The US and allies must arm Ukraine to the teeth.”

Implications for the War

Allowing Ukraine to target Russian territory marks a critical moment in the war, now in its fourth year. Western leaders aim to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities while avoiding direct NATO involvement. However, experts warn expanded strikes could provoke a harsh Russian response, raising risks of a broader conflict.

Chancellor Merz acknowledged these risks but defended the policy as vital for Ukraine’s self-defense. “Ukraine needs the tools to protect its sovereignty,” he affirmed.

Conclusion

Germany’s decision to lift missile restrictions underscores growing Western resolve to counter Russian aggression. By enabling Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory, the policy sends a clear signal of support while increasing the stakes of the conflict. As Ukraine’s President Zelensky visits Berlin this week, the world awaits further developments in this escalating war.
