Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership, Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, recently met at the Sindh Investment Department. They discussed transformative infrastructure projects, including the Karachi Port Malir Expressway Connection via the Qayyumabad Interchange. This proposal aims to improve the flow of heavy traffic in the region.

A nighttime view of a shipping port with large cargo cranes silhouetted against a twilight sky. The sky transitions from deep blue at the top to orange near the horizon. The port is lit with artificial lights, and the calm water reflects both the lights and the dark structures of the cranes, creating a serene industrial scene.

Focus on Strategic Infrastructure Projects

During the meeting, both parties deliberated on several key initiatives:

  1. Logistics Park Development: Creating a dedicated park to meet the parking needs of heavy port traffic.
  2. Seawater Desalination: Converting seawater into potable and industrial-grade water for industries.
  3. Traffic Optimization: Allowing heavy vehicles direct access from Karachi Port to the M-9 Superhighway without entering the city. This will alleviate urban congestion.

The two sides agreed to organize a joint meeting between the Sindh government and Karachi Port Trust (KPT). This will help determine the feasibility and implementation plan for the Karachi Port-Shahrah-e-Bhutto connection.

Enhancing Port Accessibility

Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar emphasized the importance of the Karachi Port-Malir Expressway project, noting that it would streamline heavy traffic movement to and from the port. By providing direct access to the M-9 Superhighway, the project aims to reduce transit time, lower fuel costs, and alleviate traffic congestion in Karachi’s urban areas.

Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry lauded the initiative and assured his full support. He recognized the project’s potential to bolster the region’s logistics efficiency and economic competitiveness.

A tugboat named "SCHELDE 20" navigates through the water in an industrial port. In the background, large container cranes, cargo ships loaded with containers, and tall communication towers dominate the scene. The sky is partly cloudy with high-voltage power lines visible overhead, emphasizing the industrial setting. The water is slightly choppy, and crew members are visible on the deck of the tugboat.

Participation of Senior Officials

The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including Raja Khurram Shahzad, Secretary of Investment, Sindh, and Asad Zamin, Director General of the Public-Private Partnership Unit. Their insights and expertise were pivotal in identifying actionable steps and aligning project objectives with broader developmental goals.

Looking Ahead

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both federal and provincial governments to modernize Karachi’s infrastructure and boost economic growth. By advancing projects like the Karachi Port connection to Malir Expressway, logistics park establishment, and seawater desalination, stakeholders aim to create a sustainable and efficient industrial ecosystem.
