A Bold Stand for Palestine

Turkish Kung Fu champion Necmettin Erbakan Akyüz made international headlines after he threw his European Championship gold medal into the Nile River. He took this courageous step to protest Israel’s military actions in Gaza and to show unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people during a visit to Egypt.

Criticism of Europe and Call for Justice

According to multiple media reports, Akyüz openly criticized European countries for their support of Israel’s ongoing aggression in Palestine. He accused these nations of complicity and injustice. During his visit to Egypt, he described his act of discarding the gold medal as a symbolic sacrifice made on behalf of the people suffering in Gaza.

Suspended for Supporting Palestine

In 2023, Akyüz won the European Kung Fu Championship. At the victory ceremony, he raised the Palestinian flag as a clear message of support for Palestine. This gesture sparked an official investigation by the championship organizers. As a result, his title was suspended. However, Akyüz remained resolute and refused to apologize or retract his support.

Viral Video Protest
On May 26, Akyüz posted a video on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In it, he declared, “No personal achievement of mine is more valuable than a single drop of the blood of oppressed Palestinians.” Immediately following this statement, he dramatically threw his gold medal into the Nile River, making a powerful protest statement.

Accusations Against the Federation
Akyüz claimed that the World Kung Fu Federation had threatened to strip him of his medal due to his display of the Palestinian flag. Defiantly, he responded, “I sacrifice my world medal for Gaza,” reinforcing his commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Criticism of Zionist Influence in Sports
He accused the international sports community of being influenced and controlled by Zionist interests. Akyüz stated that Jewish influence extends into many global sectors, including sports. According to him, this influence pressures athletes into silence or submission. He insisted that his title was earned purely through hard work and dedication.

A Message to Israel
In a powerful statement directed at Israel, Akyüz declared, “As long as we are alive, these lands will never serve your interests.” He described the suspension of his title as a direct retaliation for his unwavering support of Palestine.

A Symbolic Act That Resonated Globally
The video of Akyüz’s protest quickly went viral across various social media platforms. Many around the world now regard his bold act as one of the most symbolic and courageous gestures of solidarity with Palestine in the history of international sports.
