ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to approve the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy in the coming week, a move that will then be presented to the federal cabinet for final approval and implementation.

The Ministry of Industries and Production has finalized the draft of the EV policy after thorough stakeholder consultations and has submitted it to the PM for review. The policy targets a major shift toward clean and green mobility, with a goal of ensuring that over 30% of new vehicle sales in Pakistan by 2030 are electric.

Key incentives in the EV policy include:

  • A Rs50,000 subsidy for electric motorcycles
  • A Rs200,000 subsidy for electric rickshaws (three-wheelers)
  • A total subsidy allocation of Rs4 billion

In addition, the policy emphasizes the development of EV infrastructure, including nationwide electric vehicle charging stations.

In a related development, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan recently met with a COMSATS delegation to discuss advancing EV technology and promoting electric motorcycle retrofitting across Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by:

  • Saif Anjum, Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production
  • Nafees Zakaria, Executive Director, COMSATS
  • Khuda Bakhsh Ali, CEO, Engineering Development Board

During the discussion, Mr. Akhtar highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of electric vehicles, reiterating the government’s commitment to clean energy adoption and sustainable transportation, aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz’s vision for a green and economically robust Pakistan.
