ISLAMABAD: In a significant move on Thursday, the Pakistan Senate unanimously passed a resolution to designate May 25 as Pakistan-Africa Friendship Day. The resolution was introduced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during a Senate session that also featured sharp condemnation of India, accused of backing terrorism inside Pakistan.
The resolution reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations across multiple sectors, including politics, economy, technology, culture, and education. The announcement was made in the presence of African ambassadors and high commissioners seated in the visitors’ gallery.

Highlighting Pakistan’s contributions to African peacekeeping efforts in countries like Rwanda, Ghana, and Ivory Coast, Dar noted the country’s dedication to Africa’s development. He emphasized expanding cooperation in areas like textiles, pharmaceuticals, surgical tools, sports gear, and IT services, particularly through Pakistan’s digital training programs aligned with Africa’s digital growth strategy. He also mentioned Pakistan’s expanded diplomatic reach under the Engage Africa Policy.
PTI Parliamentary Leader Syed Ali Zafar lauded the declaration and called Africa “a continent of youth, values, and vision.” He proposed an annual Pakistan-Africa Cultural Festival to showcase shared traditions, music, and art.
