On Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif officially inaugurated the newly completed Jinnah Square Murree Road Underpass, a major infrastructure project finished in just 35 days.
Spanning roughly 479 meters and comprising three traffic lanes, the underpass is a key component of a broader vision to establish a signal-free corridor connecting Islamabad Airport to Murree. The aim is to ease traffic congestion and significantly cut travel time for daily commuters and tourists alike.
At the inauguration event, PM Shehbaz praised the swift and coordinated efforts of Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairperson Muhammad Ali Randhawa, and IG Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. He hailed the project as one of national importance, enhancing connectivity to the scenic region of Murree.
“This success is the result of national unity and divine blessings. Our nation’s proud achievements will be remembered, even by our adversaries,” the Prime Minister stated.
In addition to the underpass, the project also includes a developed road network and landscaped surroundings.
PM Sharif highlighted that the nearly 9-kilometer route will not only benefit residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, but also boost nationwide travel through improved access to Murree.

Earlier, Interior Minister Naqvi briefed the Prime Minister on project details and shared upcoming plans, including the Shaheen Chowk Underpass design and new tourism developments such as a Safari Park and Chairlift in the Murree area.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Federal Ministers Hanif Abbasi and Dr. Tariq Fazl Chaudhary, along with Ministers of State Talal Chaudhary, Talha Burki, and other members of Parliament.
Meanwhile, in Sargodha, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the Nawaz Sharif Flyover. Provincial Minister Sohaib Ahmed Bharth informed her that the project, which cost Rs2.2 billion, was completed in eight months. The 1.3 km flyover is expected to serve over 30,000 vehicles daily and will benefit travelers coming from Khushab, Mianwali, and Bhakkar.
