From Punk Music to Media Icon

Barry’s journey began in Belfast, where his love for music ignited his creative pursuits. As the vocalist of Shock Treatment, a post-punk band, he performed alongside legendary acts like U2 and The Skids. These experiences laid the foundation for his remarkable media career.

He transitioned from music to journalism, starting with local newspapers and later contributing to Melody Maker in the early 1980s. Recognizing his vibrant storytelling, Barry became editor of Smash Hits in 1986. Under his leadership, the magazine thrived, reflecting the pulse of the music industry during its golden years.

The Creation of Empire Magazine

In 1989, Barry launched Empire Magazine, marking a pivotal moment in his career. He collaborated with like-minded colleagues to build a publication that truly celebrated cinema. His vision turned Empire into a global authority on movies.

During his three years as editor, Barry established the magazine’s unique voice. Readers enjoyed in-depth interviews with film icons, behind-the-scenes stories, and thorough reviews. Barry’s motto, “At last, the movies get the magazine they deserve,” resonated deeply with audiences and ensured Empire‘s lasting appeal.

An Editor with Boundless Vision

Barry constantly pushed editorial boundaries. He insisted on emphasizing the artistry of films over celebrity appeal, setting Empire apart from its competitors. Covers featured Michael Keaton, Julia Roberts, and Dennis Quaid, while the content celebrated the magic of cinema.

In a reflection for Empire’s 400th issue in 2022, Barry highlighted the principles that defined his leadership. He stated, “The movie is always bigger than the star,” reaffirming his dedication to storytelling and filmmaking excellence.

Expanding His Influence Beyond Magazines

Barry’s influence extended beyond Empire. He excelled as a broadcaster, publisher, and mentor, inspiring countless professionals. Colleagues admired his warmth, humor, and ability to nurture creativity, cementing his status as a cherished figure in the media industry.

The current Empire editorial team honored his contributions, stating, “Barry set a standard we strive to uphold every day. His work and his kindness will always be remembered.”

A Lasting Legacy

Barry leaves behind a loving family, including his children Lola, Frankie, and Mary, who now carry his legacy forward. While his loss is deeply felt, his achievements remain a source of inspiration.

Barry McIlheney will be remembered as a pioneer, a storyteller, and a cherished friend. His contributions to media and his enduring influence will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, Barry McIlheney.
