Azerbaijan has signed a $4.2 billion deal to purchase JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, jointly produced by Pakistan and China. This agreement significantly expands Azerbaijan’s earlier order, increasing its purchase from 16 to 40 aircraft. The deal marks a major step in strengthening Azerbaijan’s air force capabilities.

Earlier, in February 2024, Azerbaijan signed a $1.6 billion contract to acquire 16 JF-17 advanced multirole jets. Reports confirm that Azerbaijan received these jets by September 2024. With this new deal, Azerbaijan clearly demonstrates its commitment to upgrading its air fleet and deepening defence cooperation with Pakistan.

This agreement elevates Pakistan as one of Azerbaijan’s top military suppliers, alongside countries like Turkey, Russia, and Israel. Reports show that manufacturers have produced over 160 JF-17 jets to date. Pakistan operates around 145 of these jets, while Myanmar, Azerbaijan, and Niger have received the remaining aircraft.

Azerbaijan Just Made a Massive $4.2 Billion Jet Deal with Pakistan – Here’s Why It Matters

Although both governments have yet to officially confirm the deal, Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, announced the $4.2 billion contract on X (formerly Twitter). He described the deal as a strong symbol of brotherhood, trust, and a shared vision for the future between Azerbaijan and Pakistan.

Shahidov emphasized that acquiring the JF-17 Block III jets will enhance Azerbaijan’s air capabilities, protect national sovereignty, and improve its regional stance. He praised Pakistan and Azerbaijan’s close collaboration and mutual support during challenges and successes.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening strategic partnerships. During a meeting in Lachin, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with growing political, economic, defence, and cultural cooperation between Islamabad and Baku. Prime Minister Sharif also thanked Azerbaijan for its unwavering support during recent tensions between Pakistan and India, highlighting the strong bond between the two nations.
