The New York Liberty record performance shone brightly on Sunday as they tied their WNBA record by draining 19 three-pointers in a stunning 100-52 victory over the Connecticut Sun. This historic win marked the largest margin in Liberty’s franchise history, surpassing their 43-point triumph against Washington in 1998. However, they fell just short of breaking the all-time league scoring margin record of 59 points, set by Minnesota against Indiana in 2017.

Standout Performances Fuel the Victory

Sabrina Ionescu led the way for the Liberty with 18 points, while Jonquel Jones contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich each added 13 points to the tally. Impressively, all four players spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench as the team’s victory was already secure.

This win elevated New York’s season record to 7-0, their best start since the 1997 season. The team’s balanced scoring and unyielding defense showcased their depth and determination.

Shooting Excellence Defines the Game

The Liberty’s remarkable shooting display included 19 three-pointers, matching their own WNBA record set earlier this season against Chicago on May 22. By the end of the third quarter, they had already made 18 three-pointers, nearly surpassing the record before cooling off in the fourth quarter and adding just one more to their total.

New York’s shooting accuracy stood out early in the game. They surged ahead with a 31-13 lead in the first quarter, fueled by the combined scoring of Stewart, Ionescu, Fiebich, and Jones. By halftime, the Liberty extended their advantage to 60-28, shooting an incredible 68% from the field and sinking 12 three-pointers.

Relentless Effort Throughout

The Liberty maintained their intensity throughout the game, refusing to let up even with a massive lead. Their determination was evident in the third quarter when they challenged a foul call against Ionescu on a three-point attempt by Marina Mabrey. Winning the challenge, Ionescu celebrated energetically, running onto the court and high-fiving the staff. This moment underscored the team’s focus and drive, regardless of the scoreline.

Commissioner’s Cup Journey Begins

Sunday’s game also served as the opening match of the Commissioner’s Cup, a three-week in-season tournament. The Liberty, who reached the tournament final last year before losing to Minnesota, began this year’s campaign with an emphatic statement win. Their determination to go all the way this season is clear.

Conquering a Grueling Week

The Liberty’s win capped off a demanding stretch of four games in six days. Despite the packed schedule, New York remained resilient and dominant, showcasing their depth and ability to adapt. With a few days’ rest ahead, the team now looks forward to their next matchup against Washington on Thursday.

Connecticut’s Struggles Continue

For the Connecticut Sun, the game was an uphill battle from the start. Tina Charles and Jacy Sheldon led the team’s offense with 10 points each, but they struggled to keep up with New York’s relentless scoring and sharpshooting. The Sun’s record now stands at 1-6, highlighting the challenges they’ve faced in the early stages of the season.

Key Highlights of New York Liberty’s Performance

  • Record-Matching Three-Point Shooting: The Liberty equaled their own WNBA record with 19 three-pointers in a single game.
  • Franchise Record Victory Margin: The 48-point win set a new benchmark for the Liberty’s largest margin of victory.
  • Team Effort: Contributions from stars like Ionescu, Stewart, Jones, and Fiebich drove the team’s success.
  • Strong Commissioner’s Cup Start: New York began the in-season tournament with an authoritative win.
  • Impressive First-Half Efficiency: Shooting 68% from the field in the first half, the Liberty set the tone early.

Liberty’s Outlook for the Season

The New York Liberty’s dominant performance against the Connecticut Sun underscores their status as a formidable contender this season. With their offensive firepower, defensive tenacity, and unmatched depth, the team looks poised for continued success in both the regular season and the Commissioner’s Cup.
