Federal Government Launches Major Healthcare Initiative in 2025–26

The federal government plans an ambitious healthcare initiative in the 2025–26 fiscal budget. Specifically, it will develop new hospitals across all provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan. The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination will fund this major expansion in medical infrastructure. This initiative marks one of the largest efforts in recent years to strengthen Pakistan’s healthcare system.

Goals of the Healthcare Initiative

This initiative aims to provide equal access to quality care throughout Pakistan. Moreover, the government has already selected specific zones for hospital development to ensure targeted and efficient use of resources. The focus is to reduce disparities in healthcare access, especially in remote and underserved areas, thereby improving overall public health outcomes.

Hospital Development in Various Regions

In AJK, new hospitals will arise in Mirpur and Bhimber. Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) will get hospitals in Chitral and the merged tribal districts. These areas have traditionally faced severe infrastructure shortages. Sindh will see a hospital built in Tharparkar, a remote district facing severe challenges such as drought and poverty. Furthermore, Balochistan will get a large 500-bed hospital in Panjgur to meet urgent health needs, addressing long-standing gaps in critical care facilities.

Specialized Healthcare Facilities

Punjab will benefit from a dedicated cancer hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan. This facility will address the rising number of cancer cases in southern Punjab and nearby regions. Consequently, it will improve cancer care in the area by providing specialized treatment and support, which was previously unavailable locally. This hospital is expected to become a regional hub for oncology services.

Improving Primary and Secondary Care

In AJK, hospitals in Mirpur and Bhimber will bring primary healthcare services closer to residents. KP’s new hospitals will relieve pressure on existing facilities and provide quicker medical attention before patients move to secondary care. Therefore, these hospitals will improve healthcare delivery and reduce patient wait times. They will also strengthen emergency response capabilities in these regions.

Addressing Regional Challenges

Sindh’s Tharparkar hospital will offer diverse healthcare services to a region often impacted by drought and poverty. As a result, these efforts will help reduce regional health disparities and improve care for underserved populations. The initiative also includes training local healthcare workers to ensure sustained quality care.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

The government will also solarize major hospitals like PIMS and Poly Clinic in Islamabad. This move will reduce energy costs and support sustainable development. In addition, it shows a strategic focus on expanding access while improving efficiency in the public health sector. The adoption of renewable energy will also reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare facilities.

A Step Toward a Healthier Pakistan

If these projects succeed, Pakistan will take a big step toward a healthier and more equitable future. Quality medical care will become accessible to all, regardless of region or income. Ultimately, this initiative could transform public health across the country by ensuring that no community is left behind.
