Government funding for new universities. The Government of Pakistan has approved more than Rs. 9 billion funding for five public universities across the country. This funding has been approved under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2025-26. This funding approved by the Government of Pakistan demonstrates a devoted interest to ensure that the higher education infrastructure framework is enhanced and access to quality education is increased indefinitely across Pakistan.

Funding Breakdown for Each University

The government plans to distribute the allocated funds to universities in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Below are the details of the allocations and project approval dates:

  • University of Sahiwal: The government approved Rs. 1.37 billion for this project, initially sanctioned by the Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) in 2020. These funds will enhance campus facilities, academic resources, and research capabilities.
  • Women University Bagh, AJK: This women-focused institution will receive Rs. 1.80 billion. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) approved the project in 2016. The investment aims to upgrade campus infrastructure and expand academic programs for female students.
  • FATA University: The government allocated Rs. 1.76 billion for this university, with CDWP approval dating back to 2015. This funding targets improving educational opportunities in the formerly Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
  • University of Chitral: The government assigned Rs. 1.72 billion to this project, with approval from the DDWP in 2020. These funds will support ongoing development efforts and improve learning environments in this remote region.
  • University of Gwadar: Receiving the largest allocation of Rs. 2.49 billion, this university’s project was approved by the CDWP in 2022. The funds will develop advanced academic infrastructure in Gwadar, a strategic port city with growing economic significance.

Driving Regional Educational and Economic Growth

This sizable investment is representative of the government’s aim to uplift educational standards while also encouraging regional development. The government intends to establish new universities in poorer and developing locations and, by doing so, provide more educational opportunity and enable our youth to compete for employment on a regional and national basis with skills they have been exposed to.

These investments will also be accelerating the economy, providing employment, and enhancing social development by enabling the next generations of youth through educational opportunity.

Monitoring Implementation and Future Outlook

As Pakistan prepares to finalize the federal budget for 2025-26 education stakeholders and people of Pakistan are eagerly awaiting reviews of project processes as well as funds. As long as sound oversight measures are in place, these projects will be successful and offer considerable benefits to the education sector in Pakistan.
