Pakistan Myanmar AFC Qualifier action continues, with Pakistan losing 1-0 against Myanmar in Group ‘L’. The outcome is just another setback in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 campaign. The team is winless and faces increased pressure ahead of their October showdown with Afghanistan.

Following an earlier defeat to Syria, head coach Stephen Constantine made tactical adjustments that failed to deliver. The loss now casts serious doubts over Pakistan’s ability to mount a comeback in the remaining fixtures, including a critical double-header against Afghanistan in October.

Disappointing First Half Undermines Pakistan’s Hopes

Myanmar took advantage of the Pakistani defensive tactic, as they controlled the ball and used the loopholes in the midfield. Pakistan striker “Fareedullah” was left isolated and the team failed to build any attacking impetus.

The 41st minute was the pivotal moment. Myanmar’s Mg Mg Lwin floated a free-kick into the box, which was redirected and eventually volleyed by Soe Moe Kya. Than Paing was in the right place to tap in the rebound from close range after goalie Yousuf Butt pushed the shot onto the post..

After the game, Abdullah Iqbal, the captain of Pakistan, vented his frustration.

“We weren’t in shape and lacked courage to play in the first half. It wasn’t good enough. We let the nation down. But the second half was an improvement and showed our real capability.”

Improved Second Half Brings Hope, But No Result

Constantine made significant adjustments to the lineup after halftime. Pakistan showed more intent and pressed harder in attack. But Myanmar, encouraged by a previous victory over Afghanistan, maintained its organisation and denied Pakistan any decisive opportunities.

Due to internal problems within the Pakistan Football Federation, including those pertaining to the election, the game that was initially planned to take place in Pakistan was moved. Pakistan will now host Myanmar for the return fixture in March next year.

Pakistan is still at the bottom of the group even though they had some promising moments in the second half. With pressure mounting and time running out, the upcoming clashes against Afghanistan are now must-win games.
