King Charles Knighthood Sparks Major Backlash for Sadiq Khan

LONDON – Sadiq Khan knighthood controversy. In a controversial decision, King Charles Knighted Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan on December 30, 2024. The honor was part of the New Year’s Honours list and has sparked widespread criticism and even downturned a nationwide petition signed by over 220,000 people to rescind the honour.

Despite being criticized for a week, the honour proceeded unaltered. Opponents, including senior Conservatives, created almost 30 petitions asking for the honour to be taken away. They accused Khan of having made London increasingly divided, stagnant, and a place where he could escape blame for the ongoing predicament.

Political and Public Reaction

David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, called on those who were critical of Khan, to focus on Khan’s journey—from the son of a bus driver to a knight of the realm. Lammy praised Khan’s efforts on clean air, free school meals, and increasing council housing, and framed the award as recognition of social mobility and service to the public.

Sadiq Khan Knighted by King Charles Despite Public Uproar

In contrast, Chris Philp, the Shadow Home Secretary, condemned the honour, raising issues of record crime levels in London, lack of housing and skyrocketing council tax, all achieved under Khan’s watch. Critics pointed out that knife crime rose by 16% during his gift and that between 2019 and 2024, rents rose by 32%.

Khan’s Response to the Honour

In a social media post, Khan thanked people for their support, reflecting on how he went from growing up on a council estate to being a Mayor. He also reiterated his commitment to London, but acknowledged the challenge of facing criticism as a public figure.

Public Sentiment and Debate

The knighthood generated mixed reactions among the public. Proponents praised Khan for his efforts to make the city better and champion social causes. Critics, on the other hand, wanted accountability on real issues – crime, housing problems, and the cost of living for residents.

What Comes Next

As the controversy continues to be ramped up, both sides gear up for ongoing public commentary. Khan will continue to face scrutiny—especially on the topics called into question by his critics. His defenders similarly present information to say Khan’s record warrants the honour.
