Pakistan solar power 25%. Pakistan has achieved a major breakthrough in renewable energy by generating 25.3% of its utility-scale electricity from solar power during the first four months of 2025. This landmark accomplishment places Pakistan among fewer than 20 nations worldwide that have reached this level of monthly solar energy contribution.

Solar Becomes Top Electricity Source

In a stunning turnaround, solar energy in Pakistan has risen from the fifth-largest source of electricity in 2023 to the leading one in 2025. This growth outpaces global trends significantly. While the world average for solar stands at 8%, Pakistan now generates over three times that figure. In comparison, China produces 11%, the U.S. 8%, and Europe 7%.

Massive Growth Driven by Solar Imports

The sharp increase in Pakistan’s solar power generation stems from a major surge in solar equipment imports, especially from China. Between 2022 and 2024, Pakistan expanded its solar panel imports from 3,500 megawatts (MW) to 16,600 MW—a fivefold increase. The pace continued in early 2025, with over 10,000 MW imported in the first four months, marking an 18% rise from the same period last year. This has elevated Pakistan’s share of global solar module imports, reflecting a significant step toward clean energy self-reliance.

Leading the Renewable Transition

This import-driven growth has shifted Pakistan’s energy landscape. Solar power has now overtaken traditional sources like gas, coal, hydro, and nuclear energy. This marks a powerful shift toward renewables, driven by both necessity and vision.

Pakistan Shocks the World: 25% of Its Power Now Comes from the Sun

Pakistan has set an ambitious target: to generate 60% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. As of early 2025, renewables already account for 28% of the country’s electricity mix. Solar energy, being the fastest-growing and most affordable, is expected to lead this transition.

A Rare Global Achievement

Only 17 countries have ever achieved the feat of producing 25% or more of their electricity from solar power in any month. Most are in Europe, with just three outside the continent—Australia, Chile, and now Pakistan. What makes Pakistan’s accomplishment even more remarkable is that it has reached this level with a much lower GDP per capita than others in the elite group.

The Road Ahead: More Solar Expansion

Pakistan plans to continue expanding its solar capacity at a rapid pace. The government views solar modules as the quickest and most cost-effective solution for achieving clean energy goals. More solar farms, better grid infrastructure, and long-term energy planning will ensure solar’s continued dominance in the country’s power mix.

Addressing Gaps and Equity

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Access to solar energy is still limited for many residents in dense urban areas and apartments. Adoption so far has been led by industries and wealthier households. Ensuring solar access for all will require policy reforms, rooftop solutions, and infrastructure development.

Final Thoughts

Pakistan has emerged as a surprising but powerful global leader in solar energy. From relying heavily on fossil fuels, the country now generates a quarter of its electricity from the sun. With bold targets, rapid expansion, and increasing public demand, Pakistan is firmly on the path to becoming a true solar superpower.
