A Milestone for Pakistan’s Digital Expansion

Pakistan’s digital journey reached a major breakthrough as the Pakistan Telecom Users Cross 200 Million. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced the milestone at a high-level event attended by executives from Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, Zong, and SCO.

5G Rollout Progressing Steadily

IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, speaking at the event, confirmed the government’s strong commitment to launching 5G services in Pakistan. She assured attendees that groundwork for the 5G rollout is already underway, which will enhance connectivity and accelerate national digital growth.

Free Data and Calls to Celebrate Subscribers

In celebration of the achievement, mobile operators will offer 2GB of free data and 200 on-net call minutes to all subscribers on Friday, June 20. The benefits, valid for 24 hours, can be activated by dialing *2200#. This limited-time promotion marks appreciation for customers’ support in driving Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Expanding Digital Access for Women Students

To promote equitable internet access, PTA has joined hands with PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen to install free Wi-Fi hotspots in selected HEC-recognized universities, including campuses dedicated to women. These hotspots will stay operational for six months, providing female students easier access to educational content and e-learning platforms.

Pakistan Hits 200 Million Mobile Users—You Won’t Believe What’s Coming Next

In addition, mobile phone manufacturers have donated 200 locally assembled smartphones. These will be distributed among female SIM card holders across Pakistan, including AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, through a computerized ballot system. The move aims to close the gender divide in mobile technology adoption.

Rise in Broadband Penetration and Local Production

Although the number of active SIMs has exceeded 200 million, teledensity dropped slightly—from 81.4% in June 2023 to 81.21% in June 2025. Conversely, broadband usage has grown significantly, rising from 53.6% to 60.8% over the same period.

PTA also noted an encouraging shift in female internet participation. Women now make up 38% of mobile internet users, compared to 25% just a year ago, showing meaningful improvement in digital inclusion.

Meanwhile, the local handset industry continues to thrive. More than 36 mobile manufacturing firms are operating in Pakistan. Since 2019, they have produced approximately 136 million mobile phones, including 37% smartphones. This development supports local employment and reduces the need for imported devices.

A Digitally Connected Future on the Horizon

With fast-expanding broadband coverage, a narrowing digital gender gap, and preparations for a 5G rollout, Pakistan’s telecom industry is advancing rapidly. Backed by public-private collaboration and forward-looking policies, the country is paving the way for a digitally inclusive and connected future.
