Suicide Bomber Targets Packed Church in Dweil’a

Damascus, Syria – A devastating suicide bombing at a church just outside Damascus claimed the lives of at least 25 worshippers and left more than 63 injured, according to official reports by Syrian state media.

The assault took place during Sunday mass at the Mar Elias Church, located in Dweil’a—a Christian-majority suburb of the capital. Eyewitnesses said the attacker entered the church wearing an explosive vest and fired indiscriminately at the congregation before detonating the device.

Interior Ministry Links Attacker to ISIL

The Syrian Interior Ministry confirmed that the attacker was affiliated with ISIL (ISIS). In their official statement, authorities said the militant first opened fire on the worshippers and then activated his explosive belt, resulting in mass casualties.

Although no group formally claimed responsibility, the operation bore hallmarks of ISIL sleeper cells, which are believed to still operate in Syria despite years of counterterrorism efforts.

Civil Defence Continues Rescue Efforts

The Ministry shared updates on Telegram, stating that Syria Civil Defence teams continued to retrieve bodies and assist survivors at the scene. Local sources noted that children were among the casualties, intensifying grief within the local Christian community.

A Rare but Devastating Church Attack

This bombing is the first major attack on a church in Syria in recent years. It struck at a crucial time for the country, which is undergoing significant political shifts. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took power following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, is facing heightened scrutiny over his administration’s ability to protect minorities and restore national stability.

Political Fallout for Syria’s New Leadership

The bombing challenges al-Sharaa’s efforts to portray Syria as a safe, post-conflict nation seeking international cooperation. Both the United States and the European Union have recently lifted sanctions against Syria, signaling openness to reengagement.

However, this violent attack serves as a painful reminder of the lingering threat of radical groups that continue to destabilize regions across Syria, a country already devastated by 14 years of brutal conflict and mass displacement.

Aftermath and National Reaction

Images and video footage from the aftermath depicted scorched church walls, shattered wooden pews, and blood on the floor, as emergency teams searched through rubble and tended to victims.

Authorities have pledged to identify and bring all responsible parties to justice. Nonetheless, the bombing has left a deep emotional scar on Syria’s Christian community and rekindled fears of rising extremist violence across the nation.
