LAHORE: Punjab electric vehicle project. The Punjab government has announced a major step towards a greener future by launching a plan to introduce 600 electric buses and set up 2,000 EV charging stations across the province. The initiative aims to transform public transportation into an eco-friendly, modern, and comfortable experience for millions of daily commuters.
The decision was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman via video link on Friday. Key stakeholders, including the secretaries of the transport and health departments, the CEO of Lahore Waste Management Company, as well as several divisional and deputy commissioners, participated in the session.
Phase One: Green Buses Hit the Road
The first phase of the initiative will roll out 600 electric buses across Punjab’s major cities. These buses will help reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs, and provide a smoother, quieter ride for passengers. The move aligns with the provincial government’s broader commitment to fight climate change and modernize public transport.
Chief Secretary Zaman emphasized that the new buses will meet international quality standards, offering safe, reliable, and clean mobility for Punjab’s citizens. He instructed deputy commissioners to identify suitable locations within their respective districts for charging stations and bus depots. These decisions are critical for ensuring the success and smooth operation of the project.
Charging Infrastructure to Support EV Expansion
To support the electric buses and encourage private EV adoption, the province will also establish 2,000 electric vehicle charging points. These stations will be distributed strategically throughout Punjab, enabling both public and private EV users to access charging facilities with ease.

The project represents a forward-looking shift in Punjab’s infrastructure planning, focusing on sustainability, efficiency, and urban innovation. It’s not just about transport—it’s a move toward a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient future.
Broader Governance and Public Welfare Measures
In the same meeting, Zaman addressed several other key issues. He directed authorities to crack down on public transport overloading to improve safety for commuters. Additionally, he reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing governance, healthcare delivery, and administrative transparency.
He also emphasized the urgent need to eradicate corruption in the Revenue Department, calling it essential to deliver relief and justice to the public. The chief secretary urged the swift computerization of land records to improve efficiency and reduce fraudulent practices.
Zaman also outlined steps to manage stray dog bite incidents, calling for a coordinated response from local governments to protect public health.
With this bold EV project and its wider public service reforms, the Punjab government is positioning itself as a national leader in sustainable urban development and citizen-centric governance.
