Holy Kaaba’s Kiswa Replaced to Begin Islamic Year 1447 AH
RIYADH – Kiswa Replacement 1447 AH. The Kiswa, the iconic black cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba, was changed on Thursday to mark the start of the Islamic year 1447 AH. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque led this highly revered and spiritual process.
Every year, Muslims around the world witness this sacred tradition, which symbolizes renewal and devotion at the heart of Islam.
Expert Saudi Team Leads the Ceremonial Process
A team of 154 trained Saudi craftsmen led the precise operation. They began by carefully removing the gilded curtain, known as the Sitara, from the Kaaba door. Measuring 6.35 meters long and 3.33 meters wide, the curtain was the first component detached.
Following this, the team raised the old Kiswa, removed its golden pieces, and installed the new one. Each step was executed with detailed coordination and full focus to ensure accuracy and respect for tradition.
Kiswa Creation Combines Tradition and Precision
The new Kiswa features 47 black silk panels embroidered with 68 verses from the Holy Quran. These verses were stitched using 24-karat gold-plated silver threads, showcasing both artistry and reverence.

The cloth weighs around 1,415 kilograms and contains:
- 120 kilograms of gold-plated silver thread
- 60 kilograms of pure silver
- 825 kilograms of fine silk
- 410 kilograms of raw cotton
Furthermore, the team crafted 54 gilded elements using eight modern weaving machines at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa.
Symbol of Spiritual Unity and Renewal
This annual ritual is more than ceremonial—it carries deep emotional and spiritual value for Muslims worldwide. The Kaaba’s new covering serves as a symbol of purity, unity, and renewal.
Additionally, the ceremony highlights the dedication of skilled artisans who preserve Islamic heritage through their work. Their mastery ensures that the sacred cloth continues to represent the highest standards of faith and excellence.
Looking Ahead to 1447 AH
As Muslims around the globe welcome the Islamic year 1447 AH, the freshly replaced Kiswa stands as a reminder of the sacred connection between faith and tradition. The moment also reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to upholding and enriching the legacy of Islamic rituals with care and innovation.
