Modernization of Key Airports Begins
KARACHI – In a bid to modernize air travel, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a major initiative to install electronic immigration gates, or e-gates, at the country’s busiest international airports. These include Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, and Islamabad International Airport.
Faster Immigration Through Smart Tech
The e-gates will be established in the Arrival and Departure lounges, which means faster immigration clearance for passengers, without long queue-ups and time consuming manual check. Therefore, as the process confirms the details of identity and document in an automated way.
Use of Artificial Intelligence and Biometrics
The project will also involve deploying almost 100 e-gates within a two-year time frame; According to the project, these smart gates will use artificial intelligence (AI) and biometric technology to identify travelers with efficiency and accuracy. The immigration process will therefore be safer and faster.
German Expertise Adds Value
To achieve the desired task with a world-class output, the PAA decided to engage M2P, an esteemed German consulting firm, to lead the project. During their visit, the German experts met with stakeholders such as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and conducted a three-day workshop in Karachi, where attendees learned about the operations, benefits and technologies of e-gates.

Project Management and Progress
According to Adnan Ahmed, Additional Director of Engineering Services at the PAA, the project officially started in September of the previous year. He confirmed that the German team has been delivering quality work and that this development represents a transformative step for Pakistan’s aviation industry.
“E-gates are self-service immigration tools that reduce the need for human interaction while maintaining tight security,” Ahmed explained. “They will improve the passenger experience and increase operational efficiency.”
Improved Travel Experience and Security
Moreover, the system will reduce congestion and help border authorities process passengers quickly. By integrating AI, the system enhances accuracy in identity verification, which strengthens airport security.
Towards Global Aviation Standards
Overall, this e-gate program represents the aviation strategy of Pakistan on the world stage. “The Pakistan Aviation Authority has come to a unanimous decision on initiating this project, which is more than just about speed, it is about delivering a smart and secure and seamless experience.”
Modernizing airport infrastructure is an immense first step in modernizing air travel services in Pakistan to an internationally acceptable level.
