Strategic Deal Boosts Pakistan-UK Military Ties
Pakistan Navy Hovercraft in a major step toward modernizing its naval fleet, the Pakistan Navy has acquired three advanced Royal Marines hovercraft from the United Kingdom under a government-to-government agreement. The UK’s Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) confirmed the delivery of these refurbished vessels, originally used by the 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines and decommissioned in 2021.
Now fully restored, the Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light), or LCAC(L), hovercraft have been transferred to Pakistan as part of the UK’s initiative to offer surplus military assets to allied nations.
Versatile Hovercraft Ideal for Pakistan’s Coastal Landscape
Designed to operate on both water and land, these hovercraft perfectly suit Pakistan’s coastal geography. The Pakistan Navy intends to deploy them for amphibious missions, shallow-water patrols, humanitarian relief efforts, and rapid troop movements.
These vessels offer agility and speed, enabling operations in areas where conventional boats cannot reach. Their capability to assist in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) makes them vital tools in disaster-prone regions.

UK Firm Oversees Upgrade and Maintenance
Griffon Marine Support, located in Southampton, led the refurbishment efforts under contract with DE&S. The firm will also provide technical support and ongoing maintenance directly to the Pakistan Navy.
Commodore Richard Whalley, DE&S Head of Exports and Sales, highlighted the broader importance of the transfer. “This deal strengthens our long-standing defense partnership with Pakistan. These proven hovercraft will reinforce Pakistan’s coastal missions, support global security, and benefit our defense economy,” he said.
Strengthening Maritime Security Through Global Partnerships
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Navy emphasized the strategic significance of the acquisition, placing it within the broader context of UK–Pakistan defense cooperation. This collaboration includes technology transfers, joint training programs, and combined military exercises.
He added, “The addition of these hovercraft enhances our ability to respond quickly to natural disasters and regional threats. It also reinforces our coastal defense.”
Moreover, the transfer reflects Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its naval power. At the same time, it underscores the UK’s role in supporting regional security. As Pakistan integrates these advanced vessels into its operations, the move signals progress toward a stronger and more responsive naval fleet.
