Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, has launched a new revolution in communication through BitChat. It allows users to message without internet, SIM cards, or traditional mobile networks. BitChat is a new application that will transform personal communication and is currently in beta testing through TestFlight to iOS users.
The design of the app eliminates the centralised infrastructure. BitChat is privacy-oriented, not dependent on corporate systems, and censorship-resistant. It is especially helpful in regions that have poor or no connection. It uses a Bluetooth mesh network, where messages can jump between nearby devices.
This new architecture makes the phone of each user a bridge device. The message can be relayed by other devices within the vicinity until it reaches the recipient even when the users are not in direct Bluetooth range. The mesh network allows safe communication where mobile signals or Wi-Fi are not accessible.
Safe Bluetooth Mesh Messaging
BitChat is based on peer-to-peer messaging. No centralised servers are used, and no data is stored in the cloud. In contrast to WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger, BitChat does not need a phone number. Messages remain locally on the devices of the users, giving them complete control.

BitChat was announced by Jack Dorsey on 6 July. He termed it as an experimental platform that would provide encrypted and private messaging. BitC and message without internet and sim that employs end-to-end encryption, allowing only the sender and recipient to view the content. This removes the possibility of monitoring or unauthorised access.
The application includes group discussions known as rooms. Users can password-protect rooms and use hashtags to coordinate discussions. This renders the experience safe and easy to use.
There is a special store and forward capability that stores messages when the recipient is not online. The system sends the message immediately the recipient reconnects. This guarantees the delivery of messages in low connectivity areas.
Future releases will incorporate Wi-Fi Direct. This will increase the communication radius of the app and increase speed by direct wireless connection between devices. It will also enhance usability in distant locations or when the network is down.
Censorship Resistance & Zero Data Collection
The zero data collection policy is one of the most outstanding features of BitChat. It does not follow user data, record metadata, or store messages. No cloud backup. The software saves all information on the user’s device, reducing the risk of breaches or leaks.
Secure communication tools used during the 2019 Hong Kong protests inspired BitChat. In such cases, protestors resorted to the use of Bluetooth-enabled applications to circumvent blocked internet connections. BitChat uses the same concept. BitChat provides a secure solution in regions that restrict freedom of speech or limit access to the internet.
The developers built the app with a strong focus on resilience & privacy. It provides a good method of message without internet, particularly in political instability, natural calamities, or surveillance risks. It makes sure that individuals are able to communicate without the use of telecom networks or large tech corporations.

The Decentralised Tool Push by Jack Dorsey
BitChat is in line with the broader decentralisation effort by Jack Dorsey. His previous work, Bluesky and Damus, is also about open and user-controlled platforms. BitChat goes even further and provides users with a means of absolutely autonomous communication.
It is not a simple messaging app. It is a daring move towards tech sovereignty, where the users control their data and communications. Dorsey hopes that with BitChat, a future where surveillance, censorship, and corporate control are not obstacles to secure communication will be possible.
BitChat is a reliable solution to journalists, activists, travellers, or citizens in blackout areas. It gives users the power to chat securely, privately, and freely, without a SIM card, internet, or third-party access.
