In a significant move to strengthen bilateral economic relations, Pakistan and Russia have agreed to establish a new steel mill in Karachi. The agreement was reached following a detailed meeting between Denis Nazaroof, Russia’s official representative, and Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The discussions primarily focused on boosting industrial cooperation, particularly in the steel sector—an essential component of any developing nation’s economy. Both countries committed to forming a joint working group that will oversee the planning, feasibility studies, and coordination required for the successful implementation of this steel mill project.

Welcoming the Russian interest, Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted the caretaker Prime Minister’s vision of attracting greater foreign direct investment (FDI) into Pakistan. He emphasized that the current economic climate presents a unique opportunity for international investors, describing Pakistan as a secure and promising destination for global business ventures.

“This is a golden opportunity for international stakeholders. Pakistan has emerged as a robust and secure hub for foreign investment,” said Khan.

Khan also outlined the mutual advantages of this Pakistan-Russia collaboration, noting that the project will not only fuel Pakistan’s economic and industrial growth but also expand strategic markets and business opportunities for Russian investors.

He extended an invitation to Russian entrepreneurs to explore investment prospects in Pakistan, particularly in the following sectors:

  • Steel manufacturing
  • Infrastructure development
  • Energy sector

This high-level meeting signals a strategic shift in Pakistan’s industrial partnerships, moving beyond traditional allies and focusing on diversifying economic collaborations. The timing is especially noteworthy, as the government has recently removed Pakistan Steel Mills from its privatization list, signaling a preference for joint ventures over the outright sale of national assets.

If successfully executed, this Pakistan-Russia steel mill initiative could mark the beginning of a new era in industrial cooperation, contributing to:

  • Strengthening Pakistan’s manufacturing and industrial base
  • Enhancing Pakistan-Russia diplomatic and economic ties
