Arrival in Pakistan: A Life-Changing Moment

Dr. Ruth Pfau Mother Teresa of Pakistan. As Dr. Ruth Pfau stepped off the plane in Pakistan in 1960, she had no idea her life was about to change. Dr. Ruth Pfau Mother Teresa of Pakistan. What began as a short visit turned into a lifelong mission that made her known as the Mother Teresa of Pakistan.

Witnessing Suffering: The Turning Point

Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1929, she trained as a Catholic nun and medical doctor. Upon arriving in Karachi, she was heartbroken to see the terrible conditions faced by leprosy patients. Many were hidden from society, left untreated, and stripped of dignity. The suffering deeply moved her.

Establishing the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre

Dr. Pfau chose not to return to Europe. Instead, she stayed to help. She founded the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC) in Karachi. It became the country’s main center for treating leprosy. Through her tireless work, over 150 centers were set up across Pakistan, serving neglected communities.

Eradicating Leprosy Across Pakistan

By the early 1990s, Pakistan had become one of the first Asian countries to control leprosy—thanks to her efforts.

Expanding Her Mission Beyond Leprosy

But she didn’t stop there. Dr. Pfau also worked to treat tuberculosis, blindness, and other diseases in rural and underserved areas. She often traveled by foot or jeep to reach remote villages, deserts, and mountains.

Honors and Recognition for a Life of Service

Her incredible dedication earned her many honors. These included the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Nishan-e-Quaid-i-Azam, and even Pakistani citizenship—a rare gift for a foreign national.

Humility Amid Praise

Despite these awards, Dr. Pfau remained humble. “Awards are never for the individual,” she said. “They belong to everyone who made the work possible.”

A Hero’s Farewell and Lasting Legacy

In 2017, Dr. Ruth Pfau passed away at the age of 87. Pakistan gave her a state funeral, a rare honor reserved for national heroes. Her impact lives on in the lives she saved and the hope she gave.

A Symbol of Humanity and Compassion

In a world short on compassion, Dr. Ruth Pfau stood tall as a beacon of selfless service. She was more than a doctor or a nun—she was a symbol of love, hope, and unwavering humanity.
