PM Outlines Vision to Transform Maritime Sector

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has positioned the Pakistan blue economy as the country’s next major economic frontier. At the soft launch of the Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC) 2025, he called for unity between the public and private sectors to drive this transformation.

He highlighted Pakistan’s strategic maritime advantages, including over 1,000 kilometers of coastline and access to major sea routes. “With such a prime location, the Pakistan blue economy could be a game-changer,” he stated.

Potential of Trillion-Dollar Industry

The prime minister emphasized that even a small share of the global trillion-dollar blue economy could reshape Pakistan’s economic future. Currently, coastal trade brings in nearly $7 billion a year. He stressed that structured investment and policy development could multiply that figure.

Shehbaz Sharif also applauded the Pakistan Navy and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs for their commitment to maritime progress. He recognized their strategic vision in developing the sector.

Maritime at 100 Vision Unveiled

Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry introduced the “Maritime at 100 Vision”, a plan aiming to grow Pakistan’s maritime economy into a $100 billion industry by 2047. He described the oceans as vital economic lifelines, not just geographical features.

He noted the importance of maritime resources in expanding tourism, aquaculture, clean energy, and natural resource extraction. “Pakistan must establish itself as a major maritime hub,” Chaudhry asserted.

Strategic Insights from Naval Leadership

Commodore Ahsan Ali Khan, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff, underlined that oceans worldwide are becoming key engines of economic growth. He encouraged Pakistan to adopt this global trend and capitalize on its maritime strengths.

Support for Iran and Regional Peace

On the sidelines of PIMEC 2025, PM Shehbaz met Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam. They discussed regional developments, including Israeli attacks on Iran. The prime minister condemned the aggression, calling it a violation of the UN Charter.

He expressed condolences over Iranian civilian casualties and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran. Shehbaz Sharif also mentioned his recent conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, where he confirmed Pakistan’s support for Iran at the UN Security Council.

A Path to Prosperity

Prime Minister Shehbaz concluded by urging global cooperation and local innovation. He believes the Pakistan blue economy holds the key to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development if national efforts align with strategic goals.
