ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has officially launched a Rs180 million upgrade project for Skardu International Airport, aiming to strengthen air connectivity and promote economic growth in Gilgit-Baltistan. This strategic initiative is part of broader efforts to transform Skardu into a gateway for international tourism and trade.

The launch ceremony was held at a local resort in Skardu and attended by several high-ranking officials and stakeholders. The event marked a major milestone in the region’s development agenda, setting the stage for major infrastructural transformation in Pakistan’s north.

Swiss-Pakistani Joint Venture to Lead Airport Design

The project will be spearheaded by a joint venture consultancy consisting of the Swiss firm Intairplan and its Pakistani partners. Together, they presented a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the airport’s development, detailing plans for design upgrades, enhanced infrastructure, and improved passenger services.

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) was well-represented at the event. Attendees included the Director of Planning and Development, Additional Director of Project Monitoring, Project Director of Skardu International Airport, and the Airport Manager Skardu. Local administrative leaders, military officials, law enforcement representatives, and members from various government and private institutions were also present to show unified support for the initiative.

Timeline and Project Cost

Officials have finalized the design consultancy contract with a budget of Rs180 million. The design phase, which includes preparing the PC-1 (Project Concept-1) document, will span several months. Once the planning and design processes are complete, the authorities aim to begin construction within a year.

The government plans to transform Skardu International Airport into a world-class facility. Planned upgrades include expanding the passenger terminal, enhancing runway capabilities, and installing advanced navigation and safety systems. These developments aim to handle rising passenger traffic and improve overall travel comfort.

Support from Local Stakeholders

At the launch event, stakeholders from various sectors expressed strong support for the project. They praised the Pakistan Airports Authority for taking a proactive role in boosting regional connectivity. Moreover, many highlighted Skardu’s growing appeal as a hub for eco-tourism, adventure travel, and cross-border trade.

They also emphasized that the airport’s development will play a vital role in integrating Gilgit-Baltistan with national and international markets. As a result, the region expects to see a rise in international tourism, investment, and business opportunities. Additionally, the improved infrastructure will help generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and encourage entrepreneurship.

A Step Toward a Connected and Prosperous North

Overall, the Skardu Airport upgrade marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s strategy to strengthen air links with remote northern regions. Furthermore, it aligns with national goals to promote tourism, facilitate trade, and drive inclusive development. With construction expected to begin soon, the project is poised to become a cornerstone of Gilgit-Baltistan’s economic future.
