ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has officially launched a Rs180 million upgrade project for Skardu International Airport, aiming to strengthen air connectivity and promote economic growth in Gilgit-Baltistan. This strategic initiative is part of broader efforts to transform Skardu into a gateway for international tourism and trade.
The launch ceremony was held at a local resort in Skardu and attended by several high-ranking officials and stakeholders. The event marked a major milestone in the region’s development agenda, setting the stage for major infrastructural transformation in Pakistan’s north.
Swiss-Pakistani Joint Venture to Lead Airport Design
The project will be spearheaded by a joint venture consultancy consisting of the Swiss firm Intairplan and its Pakistani partners. Timeline and Project Cost
Officials have finalized the design consultancy contract with a budget of Rs180 million. The design phase, which includes preparing the PC-1 (Project Concept-1) document, will span several months. Once the planning and design processes are complete, the authorities aim to begin construction within a year.
The government plans to transform Skardu International Airport into a world-class facility. Planned upgrades include expanding the passenger terminal, enhancing runway capabilities, and installing advanced navigation and safety systems.
