ATTABAD – A glacial outburst flood hit the Burundubar stream near Attabad Lake on Wednesday, trapping dozens of tourists and blocking routes to the luxury Luxus Hotel. The unexpected flash flood in Attabad, fueled by rapidly melting glaciers, triggered a swift rescue operation across Gilgit-Baltistan’s scenic but vulnerable landscape.
160 Tourists Rescued by Boat
Rescue 1122 officials verified that they were able to evacuate safely over 160 people who were local and international tourists using boats after the floodwater overtook the hotel. As a result, emergency services thought it was necessary to take urgent action to prevent any loss of life and ensure the relocation of affected guests since many other roads had either been underwater or damaged.
Flood Waters Rise Quickly, Trees Uprooted
Guests at the hotel said it was terrifying as water from the flood rapidly approached the hotel. When it was all over, trees had been uprooted and land washed away. There was chaos and panic from the trapped tourists.
Sudden Water Surge Causes Panic, Damage
Hotel guests described terrifying moments as floodwaters rapidly encroached on the property. Trees ripped out of the ground, land was washed away, and confusion was rife amongst the still-trapped tourists.

At the same time, another glacial flood event occurred in Barga Nallah, Skardu, where water overflowed into homes and farmlands. Residents now face major crop damage and property loss as they begin recovery efforts.
Flash Flood in Attabad Highlights Growing Environmental Crisis
Environmental officials have blamed the recent Flash Flood in Attabad on glacier melting as a result of climate change. GBEPA (Gilgit-Baltistan Environment Protection Agency) reported that these events are becoming noticeably more common and this summer’s temperatures are approaching dangerous levels.
These floods are a direct consequence of climate change, said GBEPA. “Time is up for action to prevent harm to residents and visitors.”
Experts Call For National Readiness
Environmental experts and local government officials are now calling for a stronger national response, including:
Developing modern early warning systems
Stricter environmental oversight
Comprehensive plans for climate adaptation
They explained that the Flash Flood in Attabad needs to be a national wake-up call. This summer, tourism is booming in northern regions, so coordinated preparedness is critical. Tour guides and hoteliers always need to receive updates from weather agencies and have a collaborative evacuation plan.
