China underwater tunnel record. China has achieved another engineering milestone by constructing the world’s widest underwater roadway tunnel in only 110 days. This remarkable feat unfolded beneath the Yellow River in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, further solidifying China’s reputation for fast-paced infrastructure development.
The tunnel spans 3.3 kilometers (2 miles) and boasts a width of 17 meters (55.8 feet)—enough for six traffic lanes, three in each direction. It runs 98 feet below the river’s surface, offering a critical link between key areas of the city.
Fast Build Powered by the World’s Largest Tunnel Boring Machine
Engineers relied on the Shanhe, the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, to complete the project. Thanks to its advanced capabilities, the TBM achieved a boring speed of 18 meters per day, which was crucial to meeting the tight deadline.
Moreover, despite the high speed of construction, the tunnel’s design and execution remained precise and safe. The tunnel is built to accommodate vehicles traveling up to 60 km/h (37.2 mph), improving regional mobility and reducing traffic congestion.

Transition to Smart Urban Infrastructure
Beyond its impressive physical dimensions, the tunnel symbolizes China’s shift toward modern urban mobility. Not only does it offer faster travel, but it also connects important economic zones in Jinan, boosting commerce and logistics.
Additionally, the tunnel’s construction involved eco-friendly practices and high-grade materials that ensure long-term durability with reduced maintenance costs. By adopting such strategies, China is setting new global standards for infrastructure that is both efficient and sustainable.
A Model for Future Engineering
This tunnel is more than a transportation route—it is a symbol of China’s capability to take on massive, time-sensitive projects. As countries around the world struggle with infrastructure delays, China’s widest underwater tunnel serves as a model of speed, scale, and strategy.
Furthermore, the success of this tunnel highlights the effectiveness of project management, local innovation, and investment in state-of-the-art technology. It demonstrates how well-planned execution can deliver transformational projects without extended timelines or inflated costs.
This engineering marvel also strengthens China’s Belt and Road vision, offering global partners a glimpse into the nation’s unmatched efficiency, innovation, and ability to redefine infrastructure boundaries.
