Hasina Gets Six-Month Jail Term in Contempt Ruling
DHAKA – Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, now living in exile, received a six-month prison sentence from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for contempt of court. The three-judge panel, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict on Wednesday in Hasina’s absence. Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam confirmed that the sentence becomes active once she gets arrested or surrenders.
Controversial Audio Clip Triggers Penalty
The contempt charge stems from an audio clip in which Hasina allegedly said, “There are 227 cases against me, so I now have a licence to kill 227 people.” Forensic experts from the government verified the tape’s authenticity. The court deemed the remark as contemptuous toward the judiciary.
Alongside Hasina, Shakil Akand Bulbul, a former leader in the now-banned Chhatra League, received a two-month jail term in the same ruling.

Broader Legal Battles Facing Hasina
This sentence marks the first official punishment in a growing list of legal actions against former PM Sheikh Hasina. She fled to India last August after a student-led uprising toppled her government. The tribunal has already issued three arrest warrants. These include charges of crimes against humanity tied to the state’s violent crackdown on protestors. Meanwhile, Hasina’s Awami League party remains banned. Courts are actively prosecuting hundreds of former officials linked to her regime.
ICT’s Expanded Role Under New Government
Hasina’s government set up the ICT in 2010 to try war criminals from the 1971 Liberation War. However, the caretaker administration under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has expanded its role. The tribunal now focuses on human rights abuses and corruption committed during Hasina’s rule.
Political Repercussions and Defense Claims
The choices, according to Hasina’s supporters, are made for political motives, particularly to quiet the opposition. However, the interim government stands up for the tribunal, saying that these actions are required to restore public confidence and promote justice in Bangladesh.
Global Reactions and Legal Impact
International discussion over Bangladesh’s political accountability and judicial impartiality has been spurred by the Hasina Contempt Sentence. According to legal experts, the case might establish a standard for future judicial handling of well-known political leaders.
