The Ashura procession in Karachi began on Sunday morning at Nishtar Park under intense security arrangements, as police confirmed. Yaum-i-Ashura is an annual event that is held on the 10th of Muharram and is a commemoration of the sacrifice of Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the martyrs of Karbala. This is a somber day that is observed by people in Pakistan through religious congregations and mourning processions.
Karachi Traffic Police had earlier this week announced a comprehensive plan of Muharram 8 to 10. The strategy involved specific procession routes and alternative traffic choices to minimize inconvenience to the people.
The government in Pakistan made stern measures to ensure that order was maintained during Ashura. They sent army troops, suppressed hate speech, and initiated campaigns to reduce sectarian tension. These were security measures that were taken nationwide to guarantee peace and safety of the people as they commemorated Muharram 10.
Nishtar Park is the Starting Point of Main Ashura Procession
According to police reports, the main Ashura majlis and mourning procession in Karachi began at Nishtar Park. The procession was headed by Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi and it had about 3,500 to 4,000 people.
The traffic police blocked the roads between Numaish and MA Jinnah Road to Kharadar Husseinia Irania Imam Bargah due to the event. But they permitted traffic to pass through Bab-e-Urdu Chowk, as per an official post on X.
Over 7,000 police officers are deployed to provide security as well as monitoring during the procession. This comprises 6,271 head constables and constables, and senior officers. Police also used professional snipers in strategic points along the route to enhance security.
There are also 733 non-governmental organisations that are available to facilitate the arrangements and provide support. Their participation enhances coordination and service to the people in the event.
Karachi Police are Proactive in Security and Traffic Management
The Additional Inspector General of Police in Karachi promised to provide complete security to all the participants of the 10 th Muharram processions. Traffic police officers are controlling traffic and ensuring order at the most important intersections and along the most important routes.
Police came up with alternative roads to ensure that vehicles move without interfering with the procession. This strategy minimizes traffic and ensures that the population is not inconvenienced by delays or disorientation. The police encouraged citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. In case of emergency or suspicious activity, people can call the police through Madadgar 15.
National Leaders Commemorate the Karbala Martyrs
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif released separate messages to mark Yaum-i-Ashura. Both leaders honored Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions due to their unparalleled courage and sacrifice.
President Zardari added that Karbala is a symbol of a never-ending fight against injustice and falsehood. He referred to Ashura as a shining lamp that leads people to truth and righteousness at all times. In his message, he said, this day is a symbol of unparalleled loyalty, patience, and sacrifice.
These sentiments were echoed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He said that Karbala teaches us that truth can be hard, but it will eventually result in the pleasure of Allah and success in the afterlife. He explained that the message of Imam Hussain (RA) was universal and timeless.
PM Shehbaz said, the lesson of Karbala is clear. A real Muslim will never leave the oppressed, will never leave justice, and will never leave the truth in any case.
