The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a high alert as the city braces for intense monsoon rains. Authorities have implemented strict safety measures and activated emergency response protocols to protect port operations and personnel.
KPT confirmed that all preparations are complete, including the safe berthing of vessels, real-time monitoring, and standby pilot services ready to guide ships into the deep sea during extreme weather.
To handle emergencies, tugs, pilot boats, and shipping boats remain on standby for immediate deployment. Small boats are docked in low-pressure zones, while dredgers and barges are securely fastened to prevent drifting.
KPT has placed a high priority on cargo protection. Workers have covered all types of cargo—vehicles, electronics, and high-value items—with waterproof tarpaulins. Empty containers are stacked only two units high to prevent toppling. Container yards and terminals are operating under enhanced safety guidelines.
KPT emptied trenches and sump tanks near oil piers and issued flashlight-only alerts to detect potential gas leaks. The authority also ordered thorough inspections of the drainage system, including removing debris and repairing rooftops to prevent leaks.
Expecting stormy winds and lightning, KPT warned about possible power outages and transformer damage. It placed backup generators on standby and stocked Izhar Abbasi KPT Hospital with emergency medicines and ensured an uninterrupted power supply.
KPT deployed technical teams and a 24-hour support unit. It also stationed ambulances and medical teams across the port. The Port Fire Officer mobilized hydrants and portable submersible pumps for flood management.
Additionally, KPT’s Civil Defense Unit remains on alert with trained volunteers ready for rapid action. The hospital stands fully prepared with medicines, equipment, and emergency staff to handle any crisis during the monsoon.
