ISLAMABAD – June 14, 2025:
Pakistan and Russia are taking a major step toward stronger economic ties with the official launch of a direct railway service beginning on June 22. The announcement came during a press conference held by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi at the Divisional Superintendent’s office in Islamabad.
The new railway service aims to boost trade and connectivity between the two countries. Abbasi confirmed that Russia is not only initiating this rail link but is also exploring investment opportunities in Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). This move marks a renewed Russian interest in supporting Pakistan’s industrial and transport infrastructure.
Fleet Expansion Underway
Minister Abbasi revealed that Pakistan Railways is currently developing around 200 new railway carriages, which are expected to be fully operational by 2027. These additions will strengthen the country’s transport network and improve the overall travel experience.
In the meantime, the ministry is actively working to enhance punctuality, quality food services, and cleanliness across stations and onboard trains. These improvements are central to the ministry’s mission of delivering a more efficient and comfortable railway experience for passengers.
Digital Transformation in Progress
In another key development, the Ministry of Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). This partnership focuses on implementing free WiFi services on trains and modernizing rail management through digital tools. The effort aligns with the federal government’s broader digital transformation goals.
Abbasi emphasized that this digital push will help Pakistan Railways become more transparent, user-friendly, and tech-driven. He described these initiatives as essential steps in achieving the government’s vision for modern public infrastructure.
Environmental Efforts Take Root
The railway ministry also announced a green initiative in collaboration with the Forest Department. Under this agreement, Pakistan Railways will plant fruit trees along rail tracks, contributing to environmental sustainability. Abbasi highlighted that this project supports the prime minister’s national climate agenda and promotes eco-friendly development in the transport sector.
With strategic partnerships, digital modernization, and environmental commitment, Pakistan Railways is entering a new era. The Pakistan-Russia rail service, set to launch on June 22, is being seen as a game-changer for regional trade and diplomatic cooperation.
