Authorities Take Immediate Action After Fatal Incident
Swat tragedy crackdown Local authorities have started tearing down illegal hotels and buildings close to the river after a tragic event in Swat where a sudden rise in river water carried away 17 picnickers. The death toll rose to 12 when the body of a missing child was later discovered in Charsadda, further compounding the tragedy. Rescue officials emphasized how urgent it is to remove encroachments from riverbanks in order to prevent future tragedies of this kind.
Local Business Owners Protest Demolitions
As demolition crews moved in, local restaurant and hotel owners held a protest on Fizagat Bypass Road. They blocked traffic and accused the administration of targeting smaller establishments while sparing influential hotel owners.
One business owner said, “We submitted valid court documents, yet officials tore down our buildings without warning. This is unjust.”
In response, police arrested three individuals who attempted to stop the anti-encroachment teams. District officials stated they would continue the operation to ensure public safety, regardless of opposition.
Rainfall Triggers Widespread Destruction Across KP
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that heavy rain and flash floods killed at least 20 people across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Flooding also injured 10 people and damaged over 50 homes, with six houses completely destroyed.

Shangla, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Malakand, Charsadda, and Swat were among the districts that reported fatalities. Rescue and relief efforts are still going on, according to PDMA officials, as the weather continues to change.
National Leaders Exchange Criticism
The disaster sparked sharp political reactions. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif called the rescue response a “total failure” and said emergency services arrived unprepared. “This wasn’t just a natural tragedy—it was the result of poor planning,” he added.
The KP Chief Minister’s adviser, Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, on the other hand, charged that Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz was exploiting the incident for political purposes. He said that while praising KP’s performance, Punjab’s leadership disregarded its own problems.
Swift Disciplinary Measures Announced
Despite political tension, Saif commended KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur for acting quickly. The CM suspended six officials accused of negligence during the floods. Saif stated that this move sends a strong message about accountability and disaster preparedness.
