Joby Aviation Air Taxi Dubai Trials Signal Commercial Readiness
Joby air taxi flights. In order to start its first commercial air taxi service by the end of 2025, California-based Joby Aviation, an innovation in the field of air taxis, has finished piloted test flights in Dubai. A significant turning point in the company’s deployment path was reached when the eVTOL aircraft seamlessly transitioned from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight and returned.
The latest trials in Dubai are the first time that such tests have taken place as part of a public campaign outside of the United States, despite Joby conducting a similar transition flight in California earlier this year. These successful tests strengthen Joby’s roadmap to global air mobility.
Dubai Paves the Way for Air Taxi Revolution
Executive Chair Paul Sciarra expressed confidence in the progress. He said the public has long awaited answers to when and how air taxis would become practical. According to Sciarra, Dubai will witness the initial commercial service, followed soon by a broader international rollout.

Joby has already started building its first commercial landing site at Dubai International Airport, reinforcing the UAE’s role in pioneering next-gen urban air transport.
Joby Stands Out in the eVTOL Race
Founded in 2009, Joby leads the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) race with more than $2 billion in funding. Toyota backs the venture as both investor and manufacturing partner. Joby’s aircraft carries a pilot and up to four passengers at speeds reaching 200 mph—designed for emission-free, urban commuting.
In contrast, China’s Ehang operates pilotless tourist air taxis under limited approval. Joby, however, focuses on fully certified passenger services that meet international safety standards.
Certification on Track for Dubai and Beyond
Joby is currently navigating Dubai’s regulatory process to certify its aircraft. In parallel, it’s working to obtain FAA clearance in the United States. Sciarra believes Dubai will approve the service first, setting the stage for global operations.
“With certification in Dubai and then the U.S., we’re ready to scale this vision worldwide,” Sciarra stated.
As test flights continue through the summer, Joby edges closer to turning the dream of sustainable urban air travel into reality.
